High-quality spheroidised graphite produced at Collie

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images have returned high quality results from the first spheroidised graphite product samples to be produced at the new pilot plant, in Collie. The achievement is a key step in the Company’s plans to produce BAM for the growing lithium-ion battery market.

The consistent size and shape of the tiny potato-shaped particles are highly desirable in a spheroidised product for battery anode production.

Executive Chairman Phil Hearse said the outstanding results demonstrated the fastidious preparation and planning that has gone into the equipment installation and operation.

Work to date has seen the IG6 team’s considerable technical knowledge of downstream graphite processing enhanced by hands-on operating experience with the style of equipment that is expected to be install in the future BAM facility.

“International Graphite will continue to grow its knowledge and experience in the production of battery anode materials as we head towards future commercial operations,” Mr Hearse said.

Micronised and spheroidised graphite is purified to >99.95% then coated, turning it into a smooth and highly conductive material suitable for Lithium-ion battery anodes. The Company has taken delivery of an ultra-high temperature furnace to progress its research and development program which includes investigating thermal purification as an alternative to traditional alkali or acid-based purification methods.
